The barrel of the shield is constructed of .08" (2 mm) thick tungsten that will reduce radiation exposure from Tc-99m by 94%. A 5.05 density (1.5 mm lead equivalency) lead glass window provides a shielded view of the injection fluid and the syringe markings. A white reflective surface on the shield interior improves viewing of the syringe's markings and fluid content. The window is recessed in its beveled mount to reduce scratching and prevent breakage.

Here’s how it works:

1. Prior to injection: The safety syringe is pushed into the shield until it engages. At this point, a spring-loaded catch engages the syringe and holds it in place.
2. After injection: While the safety syringe is still in the shield, the syringe’s protective sleeve is positioned over the needle and locked in place. Finger pressure on the “LOCK” side of the shield’s dual-action button prevents the syringe’s outer sleeve from turning within the shield.
   This allows the syringe flanges to be rotated to lock the protective sleeve.
3. Syringe disposal: While holding the shield over a sharps container, the “RELEASE” side of the button is pushed to drop the syringe directly into the container.
