The use of bar codes to track moving items or stock piles of food is well established at Federal Express and major food stores. This method of tracking has now moved to the medical arena with the creation of automated casualty management systems using barcode technology. These systems can now track patients and their medical information during a radiological emergency and relay the information back to both incident command and the hospital.

The ASM 990BC is capable of scanning up to 500 patients, logging their dosage while time and data stamping the readings. This information can then be correlated with the bar code Emergency Response Triage tags and used to track them from first contact to the decontamination process and on to the hospital. This will provide the medical professional with the most complete view of the patient's comprehensive exposure during the radiological incident.
