With today's laboratory climate being ultra concerned about compliance, proof of calibration, ISO 9000, quality assurance and other regulatory documentation, it only makes
sense to use I125 linearity standard to check your gamma counter linearity and CHECK-IT™ Linearity Standards from Laboratory Technologies, Inc. are the natural choice. CHECK-IT™ Linearity standards from LTI offer an excellent, quick and affordable method of third party verification of gamma counter performance. Many gamma counters suffer from a severe non-linearity problem. As the count rate increases beyond it's "dead time cutoff", counts become lost as the electronics can no longer keep up. Because of this, efficiency drops off and a "hook effect" can be observed. Being aware of the limitations of your gamma counter may allow you to take corrective action. Even in gamma counters with automatic dead time correction, settings can change over time. detector crystals age and electronics drift in gain. If your gamma counter is getting older, it may make sense to start verifying the linearity of your counter, and the accuracy of it's data reduction algorithms.
