MED-TEC provides accessories and custom milling service for custom compensators. Compensators are designed on your treatment planning system according to the system’s IMRT or conventional compensator algorithm. Once the plan is approved, you export the compensator data file in one of the supported formats, and email the file(s) to compensator@medtec.com. MED-TEC will mill a Styrofoam block for each file and ship the foam mold and a QA sheet for each file back to you. The mold has alignment holes drilled into it for acceptance of the finished product into a compensator mounting tray (appropriately fits into the wedge tray slot for your treatment unit). You should check the product according to the QA sheet using the MED-TEC QA tool. This tool makes it easy to ensure that the milled depths on the compensator can be spot- checked against the treatment planning system list of thicknesses. You can then fill the mold with steel powder (available from MED-TEC), and then seal the material in (if necessary) with mylar tape.

 

Shown here is a sample Styrofoam block with a milled pocket holding compensator material. The file name is carved into the block for patient identification. Five alignment holes are drilled into the block, as well as central axis verification marks. On the right is the mounting tray for inserting the compensator into the wedge tray slot of the linear accelerator. Five pins on the tray insert into the five drilled holes in the block to ensure that the block sits in the correct orientation on the treatment machine.
